wmaker-data

Introduction

I'm the maintainer of the Debian package wmaker-data since version 0.8-3 (July, 2008).

I've created this page with the aim of the existence of an upstream for the package outside of Debian.

'Original source' of the package, as Debian understands it, are the original icons packaged in a single archive wmaker-data.tar.gz or the like, that will later on have its place on the Debian archive as wmaker-data_<version>.orig.tar.gz. Such a file has never been, since icons come from several places.

History

In August, 2008, To fullfill the Debian policy of having this archive of 'original sources', Dmitry E. Oboukhov did its first version, wmaker-data_0.9~1.orig.tar.gz. It was not my intention, as package maintainer, to make that simple archiving without having cleaned before the package's content, and so I renumbered, using the version numbering system I choosed to use, that same file as wmaker-data_0.9~2.orig.tar.gz, which you can download from this very page.

That everything over a package initially created by Marcelo E. Magallon.

Also in August, 2008 I moved away, taking advantage of the new 3.0 quilt format of Debian packages, the files from one of the original creators, Paul Emsley, from the other files, since these have a web page from which they can be downloaded, at http://www.chem.gla.ac.uk/~paule/WindowMaker/ (there is a verbatim copy hosted in this server, at http://rolamasao.org/wmaker-data/Paul/), The result is that the file wmaker-data_0.9~3.orig.tar.gz does not containt these files anymore, and they are now on the new archive wmaker-data_0.9~3.orig-iconsPaul.tar.gz which is an exact copy of Paul's original which can be obtained from http://www.chem.gla.ac.uk/~paule/WindowMaker/icons1.tif.tar.gz. This version reached the Debian archive in november, 2009, when 3.0 quilt format packages started to be accepted in the archive.

In January, 2010 I moved also away, thanks too to the new 3.0 quilt format, the files of the original maintainer, Marcelo, from the other ones. These files will be ready to be downloaded from this page as a tar file. The result is that the file wmaker-data_0.9~4.orig.tar.gz does not containt these files anymore, and they are now on the new archive wmaker-data_0.9~4.orig-iconsMarcelo.tar.gz which is a brand new file.

Autorship and License

wmaker-data_*.orig.tar.gz

Archive versions 0.9~2, 0.9~3 and 0.9~4 don't include any type of authorship or licensing info about the icons they contain. That info can be found in the /usr/share/doc/wmaker-data/copyright file of the Debian binary package, or in the copies available from this page copyright_0.9~2, copyright_0.9~3 and copyright_0.9~4.

Thus, autorship of the archive is distributed between the authors of the logos and icons, on one hand, and on the other hand Marcelo as first collector and packager, Dmitry as creator of the wmaker-data_0.9~2.orig.tar.gz archive and myself as maintainer of this page and the archive itself.

The archive itself is

© 2008,2010 Noel David Torres Taño
over a compillation by Marcelo E. Magallon (version 0.1 of the Debian package, © 1997) and it is assumed that it is distributed under the GPL (no version specified), taking the icons theirselves as the source even when it is not specified in the archive itself. However, it is important to note that icons theirselves have other aouthors and other licenses. Normally it is interpreted that GPL without version specification refers to its first version (GPLv1) or, at licensee will, any posterior version, since all published versions of the License say that "If the Program does not specify a version number of this License, you may choose any version ever published by the Free Software Foundation."

Founding on that, by this document I give and reserve myself the right to change the license of the archive wmaker-data_0.9~2.orig.tar.gz, the archive wmaker-data_0.9~3.orig.tar.gz or the archive wmaker-data_0.9~4.orig.tar.gz to a specific or posterior version of the GPL.

wmaker-data_*.orig-iconsPaul.tar.gz

Archive versions 0.9~3 and 0.9~4 don't include any type of authorship or licensing info about the icons they contain. That info can be found in the /usr/share/doc/wmaker-data/copyright file of the Debian binary package, or in the copies available from this page copyright_0.9~3 and copyright_0.9~4. Since both are exactly the same and are verbatim copies of the original file icons1.tif.tar.gz of Paul Emsley, dated Tue, 30 Dec 1997 21:54:17 GMT they are, anyway
© 1997 Paul Emsley
and the license stated at http://www.chem.gla.ac.uk/~paule/WindowMaker/ (or its copy in this server, at http://rolamasao.org/wmaker-data/Paul/), says explicitly that the icons "are distibuted under the GNU General Public Licence, Version 2, June 1991".

Version numbering

The Debian package has passed through the following versions:

VersionDateAuthorNotes
0.1 1997 Marcelo
0.2 1997 Marcelo No changes on the icons
0.3 1998 Marcelo No changes on the icons
0.4 1998 Marcelo No changes on the icons
0.5 1998 Marcelo No changes on the icons
0.6-1 1998 Marcelo No changes on the icons
0.7-1 1998 Marcelo No changes on the icons
0.8-1 2000 Marcelo No changes on the icons
0.8-2 2001 Marcelo No changes on the icons
0.8-2.1 2006 Amaya Rodrigo SastreNo changes on the icons
0.8-3 2008 Noel No changes on the icons
0.9~1-1 2008 Noel Not published in Debian
0.9~1-2 2008 Noel No changes on the icons, with Dmitry's archive
0.9~1-3 2008 Noel No changes on the icons, not published in Debian
0.9~2-1 2008 Noel No changes on the icons, no more than a renumeration of 0.9~1-3
0.9~2-2 2008 Noel No changes on the icons
0.9~3-1 2008 Noel Not published in Debian
0.9~3-2 2008 Noel No changes on the icons, not published in Debian
0.9~3-3 2008 Noel No changes on the icons
0.9~3-4 2010 Noel No changes on the icons
0.9~4-1 2010 Noel

On the other hand, the archive has passed through the following versions:

VersionDateAuthorNotes
0.9~1 2008 Dmitry
0.9~2 2008 Noel Really, the same than the previous one
0.9~3 2008 Noel
0.9~4 2010 Noel

Versions 0.1 to 0.8-3 follow a numbering scheme quite simple: each change on the icons means a change in the version minor number (the one after the dot), each change in the package not affecting the icons is a change in the package version number (the one after the bar) and the change in the packaging by Amaya (who was not in charge of the package) is a change in the package version minor number (the after the dot after the bar). Versions 0.9~1-1 to 0.9~4-1 follow a slightly complicated scheme: the changes in the icons made only to achieve an archive with less copyright, licensing or availability problems are changes in the candidate version package number (the one after the tilde), to finally reach a future 0.9-1 version with an archive in a perfect health status.
